UMW Bake Sale

The United Methodist Women (UMW) will be holding a bake sale on Friday March 16, from 10 am till 1 pm, at Bay Vue UMC.  There will be plenty of cakes, pies, brownies, cookies and tempting sweets for you to enjoy during Spring Break.  All proceeds will by used for UMW's outreach ministry that has included gifts to area children at Christmas, blankets for the waiting rooms at the hospital, clothing for children in other countries, and other ministries that work to show God's love and compassion.

Be sure to come by Bay Vue and pick up some sweets and support the sweet work of loving our neighbors.

Bay Vue's Lenten Offering

During this Lenten season, Bay Vue UMC is collecting a special offering to support the work of Heifer International, who since 1944 has been working with small scale farmers of 5 acres or less in nearly 30 countries, including the United States to end hunger and poverty.  Worshippers were given Lenten booklets that hold $10 worth of quarters and given the opportunity to fill it up.  There are also envelopes to collect other monetary gifts during this time.  Our goal is to collect at least $500 to send ti Heifer International, for the purchase of a cow for a family in need.

Since animals provide life-sustaining products such as milk, cheese, eggs, honey and wool, they are the backbone of Heifer International projects.  For each animal received families are given a way to feed themselves, begin a business, and then pass on the offspring of that animal to another person in need.

With that act, families become the cycle of positive change.  More information on Heifer International can be found at Heifer.org.

Bay Vue United Methodist Church is proud to support their mission.

New Members Welcomed

On February 18, we celebrated with Membership Sunday and the addition of 5 new members to our congregation.  Membership Sunday is a time when we make a special effort to inform our worshippers as to what membership means in the United Methodist Church.  At the end of the worship service, we invited those who were wanting to join the faith family at Bay Vue to come forward and make their commitment known.  The congregation responded by vowing to uphold and support the new members by being examples of committed followers of Christ.

If you have questions about becoming a member of Bay Vue UMC, please do not hesitate to contact us via email or phone.

A Prayer for Unity in the Body of Christ

(Below is a prayer that United Methodists will be praying during a 75 week period of focused prayer.  Each conference of the UMC is taking a week to pray about the unity of the Body of Christ in the UMC.  The Texas Annual Conference (our local conference) will be focusing our prayers on this during the week of February 25, 2018.  Please join us as we ask God's guidance for our bishops (in the Commission on the Way Forward) who are trying to discern God's leadership for the future and the mission of the UMC.)

Holy God, we thank You for Your tender mercies and loving-kindness. Thank You for calling the Body of Christ around the world to pray and unite. Thank You for increasing Your presence, power, anointing and abundance throughout the world. You are great and do wondrous things. You alone are God.

Let Your Kingdom come, and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven for the Body of Christ. Lord, as Your people, we humble ourselves, pray and seek Your face today. We believe that as we turn from our wicked ways, You will hear from heaven, forgive our sins and heal our landscape. We will be humble, gentle and patient with each other; making allowance for each other’s faults in love. We will be kind to one another, tenderhearted and forgiving, even as You, Lord, have forgiven us in Christ.

Holy Spirit, help us to live out the Word we just prayed to You. Remove the obstacles that hinder the formation of peaceful and loving relationships between our churches.

Forgiving Lord, forgive us, the Body of Christ, for our many sins. Forgive our churches for being at times self-centered and self-absorbed. Forgive us when we have had a form of Godliness, but denied Your power. Forgive us for not always being Kingdom-minded. Holy Spirit, remind us all of those we need to forgive and help us to be quick to forgive.

Holy Spirit, help us as the Body of Christ not to yield to temptation but deliver us from the evil one.

Lord, You are Holy. Just and true are Your ways. Who can be compared to You? Who is Your equal? Yours is the Kingdom, power and glory forever. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Preparing for Lent in 2018

What is Lent? Lent is the church season that begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts until Easter. It is a solemn season of repentance, fasting, self-examination, and preparation for the celebration of Easter. It is a time that we are mindful of our human tenancy to sin and our need for forgiveness and God'sredeeming grace. The forty days of Lent remind us of the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert being tempted by Satan, and the 40 days that it rained over Noah's ark.  Forty days is a symbol of waiting and preparation that brings us out of the trials and carry us into a time of a new beginning.  The Lenten season closes with the celebration of Easter that proclaims God's promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

During the week, we will be using a 40 day prayer guide to help us walk the path together.  On Sundays during Lent, each Sunday is set aside as a “little Easter” where we focus on God's promise of resurrection for all who believe.  Please join us as we pray, meditate and celebrate together.

New Bible Study In 2018

New Bible Study on Mondays

With a new year comes a new Bible study. We will be reading and studying the Gospel of Mark on Mondays at 5 pm. This is a very relaxed study where we will be reading passages together and pausing to discuss what we have read. BYOB (bring your own Bible) and a notebook for keeping notes as we go. All are welcome and encouraged to come every week for this time of learning about the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus

District Leadership Training- 2018

The Southeast District (of which the Bolivar Methodist churches are a part) will be holding its annual training day on Saturday, January 20 from 8:30 to noon at Wesley UMC in Beaumont. This is a great opportunity for new leaders/members to learn about a particular ministry or committee. It's also a good refresher or avenue to new ideas for those who have already been serving faithfully

This year's keynote speaker will be Mrs. Linda Buser who is in the Texas Recovers- Harvey Response office in Beaumont. Following that, there will be two sessions in which a variety of training session will be offered. Some classes will cover church committees, such as Staff Parrish Relations, Finance, Trustees, Church Council issues, Evangelism and Worship. Other classes offered include: Loving God's Children, Mission Insite, and Hurricane Harvey congregational issues.

If you can make time to attend this morning event and then bring home some helpful hints and insight, then let the pastor know. Pastor Valerie will be leading the Creative Worship Workshop, and would enjoy attending with Bolivar members.

Bible Study Gets New Schedule

The weekly Bible study at BVUMC took a summer break after concluding our last study, Disciple I Bible Study.  We will resume our weekly study, but with a new schedule.  Starting on Monday, August 7th at 5 pm, the Bible study group will meet to begin a study of the book of Revelation. There is no textbook, so bring your Bible and a notebook to keep notes.  Each week the class will meet and read a section of the scripture, and then discuss the lesson, led by Rev. Valerie Hudson.  We'll talk about what it means, what it doesn't mean, and what God is saying to us in the text.

The class is open to men and women, to long time Bible study students, and to those who have more questions than answers.  All are welcome.

Back to School Party

Bay Vue UMC (BVUMC) will be hosting our 2nd Annual Back to School Party on Saturday, August 26th from 11 am till 2 pm.  This event was begun last year by the United Methodist Women (UMW) at BVUMC out of their desire to grow their relationship with the local schools.  During the school year, members the UMW and friends meet with students at Crenshaw Elementary and Middle School, to read with several students for an hour.  "It is such a joy to spend that time with the boys and girls and hear them gain confidence in their reading skills over time" says Pastor Valerie Hudson.

The Back to School Party is Bay Vue's way of helping students have one last hurrah of fun and having access to free books to take home and read.  The event is open to all Bolivar Peninsula students and their parents.  There will be hot dogs, drinks, and a water slide, so wear your swimsuit.  Information about health and safety will be available through two community groups who be at the event.  Riceland Clinic will be there to offer free blood pressure checks, and Peninsula Emergency Medical Services will have an ambulance on site and answer questions the students may have.

At Bay Vue we say, "Come as you are", whether it is at this summer event, or at worship on Sunday.  We look forward to seeing you!

Updating Our Summer Schedule

Here on Crystal Beach, it's either summer, or almost-summer (or that's how it seems sometimes).  Though "officially" summer begins June 20th, the schoolchildren and teachers are days away from the start of their summer.  And in the church, summer means a change of schedule as well.

Below is a list of our summer schedule of the things we will be doing... and not doing during the summer break.  You can also find these things on our google calendar.

YOGA FOR MEN AND WOMEN (begins June 5): Mon. at 10 am; Wed. at 8:30 am.

ZUMBA (begins June 1): first and third Thursdays of each month, 9 am.  (Zumba DVD's available on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday)

BIBLE STUDY: The Bible study group will be on summer break and will regroup in August.  During the fall they will meet on Mondays at 5 pm.

BAY VUE CHOIR: Choir rehearsals are now on Wed at 5 pm.

MEN'S PRAYER BREAKFAST: They will be on summer break and will resume in September.

PRAYER WARRIORS: They meet on the second and fourth Mondays at 10 am.

UMM Serve Mother's Day Breakfast

The United Methodist Men (UMM) meet the second Monday of each month for a prayer breakfast and time of fellowship.  Breakfast begins at 8 am with the men cooking a delicious meal and then eating it while they pray and visit.  This month they will be meeting on May 8th at 8 am to serve the women of the church, in honor of Mother's Day.  All the women are invited to come and enjoy being served with a smile.

New Summer Schedule and Upcoming Events

BAY VUE CHOIR- The Bay Vue UMC choir has been growing in number and in strength, and their weekly rehearsal for worship services has been a great way to prepare for worship. The choir is open to anyone who enjoys singing to the Lord and helping lead worship in song on Sundays.

Formerly, rehearsal was on Thursdays, but has now been moved to Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  We are currently working on special music for the summer, including Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Pentecost Sunday.  For more information, contact our pianist, Gail Abbey, or email us at the church office.

BAY VUE BIBLE STUDY-  During the past year, Disciple Bible Study was the curriculum for our weekly Bible study.  Bible Disciple Study is a 34 week study designed for a committed group to study together, beginning with Genesis and ending with Revelation.  This current study was just completed and celebrated with a service of commitment and Holy Communion.

Bible Study will be taking a short break through the month of May, and will resume June 7th.  It will be held each Wednesday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. each week through the summer.  Our study will be on the book of Colossians, and participants are invited to come, read and discuss the book week by week.  Pastor Valerie Hudson will lead the study.

In September we will begin a study of the book of Revelation.  Stay tuned for more.

UMW Is Sew Busy

Bay Vue UMW (United Methodist Women) met today and began working on a new project as a fundraiser for the church.  These creative ladies are sewing a variety of items like purses, beach bags and pillows, each with their own unique look.  The fellowship hall was filled with material and sewing machines while some of the ladies designed bags and others sewed them together. Their goal is to have plenty of them to sell at the Jane Long Festival in October and then use the funds to support the ministry of Bay Vue UMC.

During their business meeting it was decided that the UMW would begin planning their Second Annual "Back to School Party" for the students at Crenshaw and High Island schools.  That event will be held the weekend before school starts in August.

Following the meeting and some steady sewing, UMW president Mary Raney made sure the group had a delicious lunch of tasty tacos and tempting desserts.  UMW is open to ladies who are interested in serving the Lord through missional projects and events.  For more information, contact the church and ask about UMW.

New Website for Bay Vue UMC

As of April 2017, Bay Vue UMC now has a new look for our website.  Our homepage has 3 main areas of focus: worship, grow and serve.   What we do as Christians and as members of Bay Vue UMC should connected us to God in worship, connect us to each other in growth, and connect us to others in service.  That is reflected in the look of our site, and in how it operates.

The purpose of our website is to offer information to our members, and to visitors looking for worship times as well as what it means to be a part of Bay Vue UMC.   Another purpose is to give people a way to connect with each other, and learn news.  There is not a newsletter, but there is now a news section to post updates on what is currently happening.  We hope this new site will be a help as we all work together to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

Stations of the Cross

Bay Vue UMC offered a new Lenten experience this year called Stations of the Cross.  It was held April 10-12 in the church fellowship hall and rooms throughout the campus.  The purpose of the Stations of the Cross was to tell the story of Jesus' last days on the earth, from the time he was arrested at the Garden of Gethsemane to the moment he was laid in the tomb.  Each part of the story was told in one of 14 stations created by members of Bay Vue UMC, who told the story, and then, through art, gave visitors a way to reflect on that particular moment.

This event was open to the public and we were happy to have hosted a good number of visitors in our community.
